1938年蕭泰然出生於高雄一個頗具聲望的基督教會家庭，父親蕭瑞安先生是留日的牙科醫生、母親林雪雲女士則是早期有名的留日音樂家。蕭先生五歲由母親啟蒙開始學琴，加上父親所珍藏的許多古典唱片，豐富了他的童年，因此很早就展露高度的音樂天份。高雄初中畢業後，蕭泰然進入南部有名的教會學校—長榮中學就讀。在充滿琴聲、歌聲的校園中得到薰陶，加上受教於留日鋼琴家高錦花、聲樂家高雅美，成為音樂家的志向漸漸萌芽滋長。 Tyzen Hsiao was born to a reputable Christian family in Kaohsiung in 1938. His father, Mr. Hsiao Jui-An, was a dentist who completed his education in Japan and was married to Madam Lin Hsueh-Yun, a renowned musician in Japan. Hsiao was initiated into music by his mother at the tender age of five. Aided with his fathers sizeable collection of classical vinyl records, he enjoyed a fruitful childhood and demonstrated an exceptional gift in music at an early age. Upon completing his junior high school education at the Kaohisung Junior High School, Hsiao was admitted to Chang Jung Senior High School, a renowned church school in the southern Taiwan. Nurtured in a campus environment filled with the sounds of music and songs, along with the tutelage of musicians such as Ms. Kao Chin-Hwa (a pianist who completed her music education in Japan) and Ms. Kao Ya-Mei (a vocal artist), the ambition of becoming an accomplished musician gradually took root in the talented young mans mind. |

| 其後蕭泰然順利考上當年音樂系的最高學府，台灣省立師範學院音樂專修科(今國立台灣師範大學音樂學系)。專修科修業二年後，他到澎湖的白沙中學教了一年書，然後再進入音樂系讀了二年。首先跟隨甫自日本歸國的鋼琴家李富美老師(台灣鋼琴界元老張彩湘的高徒)繼續研習鋼琴；此時他與剛從法國返國的現代作曲家許常惠老師相遇，奠定了創作之路。蕭泰然後來也慢慢將學習重心從鋼琴擴展到作曲，而後到日本武藏野音樂院鍵盤專修科留學，遇到當代日本著名作曲家藤本秀夫，引領蕭泰然踏上了作曲家之路。 Afterwards, Hsiao was admitted to the most prestigious institution of music in Taiwan at the time, Department of Music of Taiwan Provincial Normal Institute (the present Department of Music of National Taiwan Normal University). After two years of study in the department, Hsiao opted to teach music at Pai-Sha Junior High School in Penghu County for a year before returning to his studies for two more years. At this point, he received instructions from several prominent musicians such as Ms. Lee Fu-Mei (a pianist who has just returned from Japan who happened to be one of the most talented disciples of Ms. Chang Tsai-Hsiang, the pioneer of piano music in Taiwan) by studying piano performance with her. As fate would have it, Hsiao made his acquaintance with the renowned contemporary composer Mr. Hsu Chang- Hui, who has just returned from France. The encounter sealed Hsiaos fate in the path of music composition. Later on, Hsiao gradually shifted the focus of his music education from piano performance to composition. He pursued further education in music by studying at Musashino Music University in Japan, where he met the famous Japanese composer Fujimoto Hideo, the Japanese composer who led Hsiao on his journey towards becoming one of the most outstanding composers in Taiwan. |
