1977這年，蕭泰然因妻子經商被倒債，迫於現實的無奈遠走美國，暫居妹妹在亞特蘭 大的家，後移居洛杉磯。初至美國那一年，意志消沉的他幾乎毫無創作，僅偶爾在自己 開設的禮品店裡彈琴自娛。有一天，一位老婦人默默駐足聆聽他彈琴許久後，對蕭泰然 說：「Young man, you are so talented. Why are you here?」這句話喚醒蕭泰然對音樂的熱 情，再加上海外台灣人的鼓勵，使他重新回到創作的殿堂，也展開了創作的黃金時代。 In 1977, Mr. Hsiao had no choice but to make the decision to move to the United States due to difficult circumstances arising from his wife’s failed business venture. He resided temporarily in his sister’s home in Atlanta and later moved to Los Angeles. In his depressed state, Mr. Hsiao made virtually no progress in the area of composition during his first year in the United States and his musical activities were limited to the occasional playing of piano in the gift shop he opened for the sake of self-entertainment. One day, after listening to Mr. Hsiao playing the piano quietly for a while in his shop, an old lady spoke to him: “Young man, you are so talented. Why are you here?” It was her very words that rekindled Mr. Hsiao’s passion in music. Catalyzed with the encouragement from the Taiwanese people residing abroad at the time, Mr. Hsiao returned to the halls of composition and ushered in his golden period in composition. |

| 蕭泰然當時已48歲。他投入在鄉土的民族音樂創作，透過音樂抒發對台灣的情懷，還進
入美國加州州立大學洛杉磯分校攻讀現代樂作曲碩士學位，受教於韓裔作曲家金教授(Dr.
B. K. Kim) 與鋼琴教授彌敦‧史坦博士 (Dr. Milton Stern)。在加大蕭泰然拓寬了視野，對現代音樂及音樂理念有更深且更廣的接觸，確立了以台灣
民謠為素材，結合古典、浪漫、印象及現代樂派等技巧來作曲的風格。透過樂曲創作，
蕭泰然將他的思鄉情懷、對故鄉風土人情的感動，一一融入作品之中。 Mr. Hsiao was 48 years old at the time. He devoted his energies to the composition of Taiwan’s folk music and expressed his nostalgia through his music. Mr. Hsiao was admitted to California State University, Los Angeles to complete his master’s degree program for contemporary music composition and received the instruction of Korean born composer Dr. Byong Kon Kim and Dr. Milton Stern (in piano). During his education at California State University, Mr. Hsiao was able to broaden his vision through an in-depth and extensive connection to contemporary music concepts that shaped his style of composition by infusing techniques of classical/romantic/impression/modern schools of music with Taiwanese folk songs as the basic elements. Through his music compositions, Mr. Hsiao was able to infuse his works with his yearning and feelings for the folk customs/ culture of Taiwan. |
