Golden Period of Composition |
|
During this period, Mr. Hsiao completed his definitive works, including Formosa Symphony, Violin Concerto in D, Cello Concerto in C and Piano Concerto in C Minor. These brilliant pieces portray beautiful imageries of Taiwan and revealed the vibrant vitality of the Taiwanese spirit. Mr. Hsiao’s music not only soothed the lonely souls of overseas Chinese people who have left their homes but also made it to the international stage for the world to recognize the voice from Taiwan. In 1992, Mr. Hsiao’s Violin Concerto in D was performed for the very first time by violinist Lin Cho-Liang and San Diego Symphony Orchestra. The performance was significant because it was the first time in history for the works of a Taiwanese composer to be performed by a reputable American symphony orchestra. The performance was largely successful and the three concertos have helped Mr. Hsiao to consolidate his status in the domain of international music as the maestro of the Asian romantic school. |

Mr. Hsiao followed by focusing all his energies in the composition of his inspirational magnum opus 1947 Overture. During the process of composition, Mr. Hsiao faced the greatest crisis in his life; he was hospitalized for an emergency operation due to a ruptured aortic aneurysm when he had just finished the second page of the score. Mr. Hsiao recalled the prayer he said to God at the time, “My Lord above, I beseech you; I have just finished two pages for my 1947 Overture. Please do not take me to Thy kingdom in heaven yet and let me finish what I have started. If you insist on summoning me to your side at this moment, indulge my final wish and finish the composition for me.” Alas, under the capable care of the Japanese physician Dr. Yokoyama, Mr. Hsiao recovered his health and completed his 1947 Overture in July 1994. 1947 Overture is a musical epic that tells the tale of Taiwanese history spanning four centuries. The masterpiece not only led Taiwanese people to soothe the wounds of history to overcome the turmoil of the time and politics, but also enabled the spirit of Taiwan to shine in the halls of international music. |
