In order to provide accessible and full-service care to and strengthen the consultation and counseling network for new immigrants and their children, the Ministry of the Interior and Ministry of Education are working jointly with schools and NGOs to implement the Nationwide Torch Project for New Immigrants. This program hopes to promote a stable life and long-term development for new immigrants, as well as Taiwanese understanding, respect, and involvement in international cultures and exchanges. Furthermore, improving cultural understanding and assisting multicultural families will benefit Taiwan in building a fair and prosperous society, establishing sustainable and happy homes, and pursuing a society with a global vision.

With 480 thousand new immigrant spouses and 2,036 elementary schools in which a percentage of pupils are children of new immigrants (accounting for 76.63% of the nation’s 2,657 elementary schools), Taiwan is indeed a multicultural society. In order to provide care for the new immigrants and their children, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Education launched the Nationwide Torch Project for New Immigrants. In 2012, 362 key immigrant schools received subsidies and carried out various projects, including 12,524 events and 16,216 home visits, with a total of 618,780 participants and beneficiaries.
